Take a look at your regret history first.

By Kristin Taff

Take a look at your regret history in 2022.

May I offer a suggestion that has worked for me? Before you start thinking about a more healthy committed 2023, the first thing to do is to look back at 2022. What regrets do you have? We often say we have no regrets, but if that were the case, we would have no way to learn what we could do better in the future. And when I say better, I mean with more integrity.

We often jump into the new year with these big audacious goals that fizzle by mid-January. I encourage you to sit with a journal and write down your personal regret history. I started this a year ago after reading The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan, and it's astounding what I've learned by doing this practice.

You may have wanted to lose 10 pounds and have yet to do so. That goes into your regret history journal, and get clear on why you want to make it a priority in 2023 and what held you back from making it happen. You also might enjoy doing this with your partner. You can look at your investments or your choices with your kids. Any regrets? I know I do! Let me remind you it's not about feeling bad about yourself but an opportunity to learn and grow into a better version of yourself.

Write down your desires for 2023.

Now that you've completed your regret history, you can have fun with your desires in 2023. What choices will you make this time that prioritizes your health first? Just write down all the big and small commitments you would like to have in this next year. Share your commitments with someone that will hold you accountable. Studies show that when we share our desires and goals with a friend, partner, or coach, they are much more likely to become a reality.

Create an anchor statement

Lastly, create an anchor statement for 2023. Mine for 2021 was, To wake rested and ready to take on the day. I had to uplevel my healthy habits to make that happen. An anchor statement holds integrity, and you never want to jeopardize your health integrity. The key is to keep it simple. You can place it somewhere close so that you remind yourself daily, but more importantly, it's taking action on your commitments.
